Pichwai

A lotus pond along the foot, under a temple hanging's scallops.

From the painted temple hangings of Nathdwara: a lotus pond along the foot of the page and a hanging's scalloped edge along the top, lotuses and buds among the leaves. Lush and devotional — lovely in emerald, rani or jamun.

The cloth that hangs behind the god

Pichwai means that which hangs behind. In Nathdwara, in Rajasthan, these painted cloths are hung behind the image of Shrinathji — Krishna as a child — and changed with the seasons and festivals: lotus ponds in summer, cows in the pastures, the monsoon, Sharad Purnima. This style draws a lotus pond along the foot of the page and a hanging's scalloped edge along the top.

It is lush, devotional and deeply Rajasthani — the lotus is purity, and the pond is abundance. It suits a Vaishnav or Pushtimarg family, a temple ceremony, and a card in emerald or rani.

Good for

  • Vaishnav and Pushtimarg families
  • Temple ceremonies and devotional weddings
  • Emerald, rani or jamun

The style sets the envelope, the opening card, the dividers and the closing, and the typeface your names are set in. Everything else is the same in every style — each guest greeted by name, only their celebrations, directions to each venue — and it can be changed at any time, even after the invitation has been sent.
