Card style

Madhubani

A fish pair and a hatched border, painted as in Mithila.

Drawn from Mithila painting in Bihar: bold double outlines, a border of hatched bands, and the fish pair that Mithila paints for a marriage, for fertility and good fortune. The brightest style here, and happiest in marigold or rani.

Painted on the walls of the bridal room

In Mithila, in north Bihar, the women of a family painted the walls of the kohbar — the room where the newly married couple first meet — with bold, doubly outlined figures: the sun and moon, bamboo, lotuses, and fish, painted in pairs for fertility and good fortune. Madhubani is that painting, and this style carries its hatched border, its suns and its fish pair.

It is the most vibrant style here and one of the oldest wedding arts in India: painted for a marriage, long before it was painted for anything else. It suits a Maithil or Bihari wedding, and any family that wants the card to feel handmade.

Good for

  • Maithil and Bihari weddings
  • Families who want a handmade, folk feel
  • Marigold, rani or maroon

The style sets the envelope, the opening card, the dividers and the closing, and the typeface your names are set in. Everything else is the same in every style — each guest greeted by name, only their celebrations, directions to each venue — and it can be changed at any time, even after the invitation has been sent.
